Building Your First Trading Playbook
Step-by-Step: Building a Playbook in Tradapt
Now that you understand the theory of a playbook, let's build one in the app.
Navigate to Playbook
In the app sidebar, click Playbook. If you haven't created any playbooks yet, you'll see the empty state with a "New Playbook" button. Click it.
Fill In the Playbook Fields
Setup Name — Short, consistent name you'll use when tagging trades. E.g., "ORB Long"
Description — One to two sentences describing the setup. Think of this as what you'd tell someone who asked "what do you trade?"
Market / Instrument — Which markets or instruments is this setup valid for? (e.g., "US large-cap stocks", "NQ futures", "EUR/USD")
Timeframe — Which chart timeframe do you primarily use for entries? (e.g., "5-minute", "15-minute")
Entry Rules — Write your full entry conditions as a numbered list. Be specific.
Stop Loss Rule — Exactly where your stop goes and how you calculate it.
Target Rule — Your target method and levels.
Position Sizing — Which framework you use for this setup (% risk, fixed dollar, etc.)
Notes / Context — Any additional notes about market conditions, common mistakes, or tips from your own experience.
Creating a Checklist
After saving the main playbook entry, you can add checklist items. Add one item per entry condition. These will appear when you're reviewing the playbook before a trade.
Adding Your First Setup to the Playbook
If you've been trading for a while, start with your most-traded setup. If you're newer, start with one setup from the Strategy Guides in the Resources section — the ORB or VWAP Reclaim are good starting points.
Create the playbook entry, then use it for your next 10 trades. After those 10 trades, review the performance and refine the rules.
Playbooks as Living Documents
The most common mistake traders make with playbooks is treating them as permanent. They're not. They're hypotheses.
Each group of 20–30 trades is a test of your hypothesis. The data tells you whether your rules are working. Adjust accordingly.
A playbook that's been refined through 200 trades of real data is one of the most valuable assets a trader can have.
