Overview
Trend-following is the strategy with the most documented evidence of edge across all asset classes. The core logic: identify when a market is trending, then enter on pullbacks in the direction of the trend.
This implementation uses three EMAs on the 4H chart to define trend direction and RSI to identify pullback conditions for entry timing.
The strategy has ~55% win rate. The edge comes from the 1:3+ risk-reward ratio — you win less often, but winners are significantly larger than losers.
Trend Definition Rules
Bullish trend (4H chart):
- 20 EMA > 50 EMA > 200 EMA (all three stacked bullishly)
- Price is above the 200 EMA
- Price making higher highs and higher lows
Bearish trend:
- 20 EMA < 50 EMA < 200 EMA
- Price is below the 200 EMA
- Price making lower highs and lower lows
Chop filter: If the EMAs are flat and tangled (within 0.2% of each other), do NOT trade this strategy.
Entry Rules — Bullish Trend
- 1Confirm bullish EMA stack (20 > 50 > 200)
- 2Wait for pullback to the 20 EMA or 50 EMA zone
- 3RSI drops below 45 during the pullback (but not below 30)
- 4A 4H candle closes bullishly above the 20 EMA after the pullback (engulfing or strong close)
- 5Enter at open of next 4H candle
Bearish trend: Reverse all conditions — look for RSI above 55, bearish 4H close below 20 EMA.
Stop Loss Placement
- Bullish trades: Stop below the most recent swing low before entry
- Bearish trades: Stop above the most recent swing high
- Minimum distance: 1.5× the 4H ATR(14)
- Never risk more than 1% of account per trade
Take Profit
- Primary: Previous swing high (bullish) / swing low (bearish) — at least 2:1 R:R
- Extended: 3:1 R:R or next major resistance zone
- Trail: Once at +1:1, move stop to breakeven; once at +2:1, trail to most recent 4H swing low
Best Forex Pairs
| Pair | Notes |
|------|-------|
| EURUSD | Clean, liquid, reliable trends |
| GBPUSD | Strong trends, slightly wider spreads |
| USDJPY | Very trend-following, BOJ-driven moves |
| AUDUSD | China/commodity correlation |
| USDCAD | Oil correlation, clean technicals |
Avoid exotic pairs with high spreads.
Expectancy Math
With 55% win rate and 1:3 R:R over 100 trades:
- 55 winners × 3R = 165R total wins
- 45 losers × 1R = 45R total losses
- Net: +120R → +1.2R per trade expectancy
Strong expectancy, but requires tolerance for 3–5 consecutive losses (normal at 55% win rate).
How to Track in Tradapt
Log the EMA alignment at entry. Track separately:
- Pullbacks to 20 EMA vs. 50 EMA (which performs better for your pairs?)
- London vs. NY session entry times
- EMA separation degree vs. outcome
Custom Reports in Tradapt let you break down performance along any of these dimensions.
