Win Rate

Win rate is the percentage of trades that close with a profit. A trader with 60 winning trades out of 100 total trades has a 60% win rate.

Formula

Win Rate = (Number of Winning Trades ÷ Total Trades) × 100

Example: 60 winning trades out of 100 total = 60% win rate.

Why it matters for traders

Win rate is important but must be evaluated alongside risk-reward ratio. A 40% win rate is profitable if winners are consistently larger than losers. A 70% win rate can still be unprofitable if losers are much larger than winners.

Frequently asked questions

What win rate do I need to be profitable?

It depends on your risk-reward ratio. At 1:1 R:R you need above 50% win rate to be profitable. At 1:2 R:R you only need a 33% win rate. Use the win rate calculator to find your break-even.

Is a high win rate always good?

No. Some traders with 80%+ win rates have poor profit factors because their losers are much larger than their winners — a common trap called the 'winning too much' problem.
